Split Step

Movement creates intelligence. An early-stage idea turned into a market-ready brand and product, with Y0LABS Venture Studio.

A pickleball player lunging wide for a low forehand, caught mid-air under a single overhead light.
01 / OverviewWhat this was

Every successful product begins long before launch.

Before the first customer signs up, before the first line of production code is written, and before marketing campaigns begin, there needs to be a clear understanding of what the product is, who it's for, and why it matters.

Working alongside Y0LABS Venture Studio, MNRL helped shape SplitStep from an early-stage concept into a cohesive brand and product experience: the visual identity, user experience, customer journey, and go-to-market strategy that would support the platform's future growth.

02 / ChallengeThe problem

People don't buy technology because it's complex.

They adopt products because they immediately understand how those products improve their lives. Split Step introduced an entirely new way of thinking about athletic performance, movement intelligence, giving players deeper insight into how they move, react, and improve on the court.

The challenge wasn't building software. It was creating enough clarity that athletes, coaches, investors, and future partners could understand the opportunity at a glance.

03 / StrategyThe thinking

Build the brand before building awareness.

Many startups market before they have a consistent brand. Split Step did the opposite. Every decision, from typography and color to interface behavior and motion, reinforced one central idea: movement creates intelligence.

The identity balanced athletic performance with modern technology, so it felt equally at home in a product demo, an investor deck, and a social campaign.

The idea, visualised

Coverage before conversation.

Build the brand first and every later signal lands on prepared ground. The campaign expresses that as court coverage: identity established, then consistency across surfaces, then awareness, then growth, each stage claiming more of the court than the last.

  1. Identity: one idea, fixed. Movement creates intelligence.
  2. Consistency: the same system in product, deck and campaign.
  3. Awareness: reach earned on a surface that already holds together.
  4. Growth: compounding, because nothing had to be re-explained.

The list carries the same four stages in reading order, so the argument holds on its own before a single frame loads.

A player set in the ready position, paddle forward, in the black and green kit the identity specifies.
01Identity
The same player from behind, mid-backhand, lit and styled to the same rules as the frame before it.
02Consistency
Overhead frame looking straight down as the player drives forward, holding the camera's eye.
03Awareness
The player fully airborne, reaching wide for a ball at the far edge of the frame.
04Growth

Campaign photography: one lighting rule, one palette, one posture of intent, so any single frame reads as SplitStep before the mark appears.

When branding, product, and go-to-market are built together, products feel inevitable instead of assembled.

04 / Interactive experienceThe brand system

A system simple enough to play by.

SplitStep helps pickleball players see what matters, improve what counts, and play with confidence. The identity had to carry that promise into a product used courtside, in daylight, mid-rally, so it resolves at a glance and holds up at speed.

05 / ProcessOne connected system

One connected system, not separate initiatives.

We designed the customer journey before the app reached users: navigation, interaction patterns, information hierarchy, and visual feedback built together to reduce friction. Then we shaped the path to market: acquisition, onboarding, community growth, influencer and NIL strategy, and content.

Rather than a campaign, the focus became an ecosystem capable of supporting long-term growth, introduced through voices already respected within the sport.

06 / DeliverablesWhat shipped

What we actually made.

07 / ResultsThe outcome

An ecosystem, not a set of assets.

Through its partnership with Y0LABS Venture Studio, MNRL helped establish the strategic and creative foundation for SplitStep's future growth.

Rather than delivering individual creative assets, the project produced an integrated product ecosystem designed to evolve alongside the company. Every touchpoint, from the first impression to the application itself, built to support the same story.
